On the second day of our vacation, we changed our plans and drove to the Yorkshire Dales in north central England. The Dales is a largely rural area with great scenes of fields, sheep, and stone walls but few places to pull off to photograph. Fortunately, I knew there was a place to pull over to photograph this bridge. The Dent Head Viaduct is a railway bridge in Dentdale, England. Construction began in 1869 and it was completed in 1875. It was planned to be completed earlier but extra time was needed due to periods of heavy rain in 1872, when 92 inches of rainfall was recorded, compared to the annual average 68 inches. The viaduct is 596 feet long and 100 feet high and consists of 10 arches. It was constructed of a local limestone, some of it quarried almost underneath the viaduct.
